First Step Family Support Center

WHAT’S NEW

Read First

The Read First Project will offer reading time and activity sessions in conjunction with First Step’s Drop In Center.  Activities will also be held in the Johnny Whatton Reading Resource Room of First Step’s Dorothy Duncan Learning Center.

During Read First, families with young children can access free services and fun literacy activities such as Read-A-Loud and a children’s book club.  Each child will go home with a developmentally-appropriate book to build their at-home library.  In addition, parents will learn about choosing great reading materials and how to incorporate reading (children and adult) into everyday home life.

Books and Bags

As a part of the Read First program we have started a Books and Bags program.. The goal of the Books and Bags program is to encourage interactive reading by lending books to young children. In order to provide as many books as possible to every child, parents are encouraged to exchange the bags weekly. This way a child will have a chance to read many different books with his/her parent.

Parent Education Classes

Be on the watch for upcoming parenting classes this Fall.

Farmer's Market Project

We introduced our new program in December of last year running a pilot class only until 2011. A wonderful program teaching families how to make use of local produce and cook healthy meals for their family. Services provided in both a class and home visit atmosphere.
